Trout in the Classroom Program

Discover Cayuga Lake coordinates a network of 20 schools, participating in the “Finger Lakes Trout in the Classroom” Program. From October through May, students throughout Tompkins and surrounding counties are raising trout, with our help, right in their classrooms!
In the spring, classes take field trips to local streams to release their trout fingerlings. Just as they have learned to care for their trout, we hope they will continue to care for their newly adopted streams.
BREAKING NEWS! fall 2022 program is underway!
Brown trout eggs were collected from the DEC’s Bath, NY hatchery on October 12, and delivered to 15 schools. An additional 6 schools will receive Brook Trout eggs the week of November 7. The map below (soon to be updated) shows what schools are in the program. See our Finger Lakes Trout in the Classroom blog for updates on classroom activities, field trips and more!
Project Goals:
Academic Enrichment: To provide a platform for hands-on learning that can further engage students in science, math, ELA, fine arts and the outdoors!
Sustainability: To equip new generations with skills and knowledge that will ensure healthy waterways and robust populations of native trout in the future.
