Aquatic Plant Surveys

The Discover Cayuga Lake Floating Classroom conducts a variety of macrophyte plant surveys each year, focused on both specific invasive species and the general plant population in the lake.  We utilize a simple "rake-toss" methodology.

Once samples are collected, there are several options for making observations and recording data:

  1. Plant identification using dichotomous and other visual keys
  2. Delineation of plant community:  diversity, density and dominance.
  3. Collection and observations of other aquatic life supported by macrophyte plants - insect larvae, crustacaens and other invertebrates.

For help with identifying macrophytes on your own, check out the Macrophyte ID Booklet developed by Discover Cayuga Lake Floating Classroom high school interns!
